AUBURNDALE, Fla. - After two days without games in Florida, the Scarlet Hawks resumed the Spring trip on Thursday with a single game against Cazenovia College. Behind the arm of James Tarala, the Scarlet Hawks moved to 3-2 on the young season, downing the Wildcats 5-2.

How it Happened

• As the team has all trip, Tech started fast. After a walk and a steal of second by center fielder Michael Courtney, Zachary Dickey doubled off the right field fence to make the score 1-0. Two batters later, Dickey scored from second on a passed ball, the second time he has done so this tournament, to bring the lead to 2-0.
• Tarala was impressive throughout, but his top of the second inning may have been the most impressive of the afternoon. After a leadoff single and then a two-error play from Tech that left runners on second and third with no one out, the senior sent down the next two hitters swining before enducing a lineout to right fielder Peter Upham to end the threat.
• Cazenovia struck in the top of the fourth, scoring on a passed ball. The score remained 2-1 after four innings, as a Scarlet Hawk threat was ended on a pickoff, the second of the day from Cazenovia starter Kamm Cassidy.
• Over the next three innings, however, the Scarlet Hawks would add to the lead. Left fielder Jacob Sorenson singled in third baseman Ian Duke in the fifth, first baseman Ted Howell drove in shortstop Orlando Cardenas-Juan on a sacrafice fly in the sixth, and designated hitter David Navarro knocked in Upham on a single in the seventh.
• Meanwhile, Tarala coasted through the next handful of innings on the mound. Through eight, he held the Wildcats to just one unearned run and kept his pitch count below 80 pitches.
• In the ninth, the Wildcats attempted to put together a two-out rally against Tarala. After two quick outs, Cazenovia strung together three straight singles, driving in a run and putting the tying run on first base. However, Tarala sent Cazenovia's Tyler Maerkl down looking to end the game.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

• Tarala was outstanding, going all nine innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on 11 hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts. He is now 2-0 on the season.
• A pair of freshman, Navarro and Sorensen, recorded multi-hit games. Both players were 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
• Dickey was 1-for-4, but had an RBI double.
• Cardenas-Juan extended his hitting streak to five games with another hit.

Stats to Know

• It took just 98 pitches for Tarala to go the distance.
• The Scarlet Hawks left just two runners on base.
