Swimming and Diving Participates in Ted Mullin Hour of Power

CHICAGO, Ill. – On Tuesday, Illinois Tech’s Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams participated in the 13th Annual Ted Mullin “Leave It in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay for Sarcoma Research. It was the fifth consecutive year the Scarlet Hawks partook in the event.

Coordinated by the Ted Mullin Fund and Carleton College, the Hour of Power relay raises money to spread awareness and find a cure for sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects bone, muscle, fat, peripheral nerves and soft tissues.

“Participating in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power allows our team to realize its part in the college swimming community in support of an honorable cause,” said Interim Head Coach Andy Parro. “Taking time to reflect on the implications of Sarcoma and raise money and awareness is a really humbling opportunity for us as a team."

The Hour of Power began after former Carleton College swimmer Edward H. “Ted” Mullin contracted and eventually passed from sarcoma his senior year of 2006.  Mullin’s family and the University of Chicago Medicine partnered together and began the Fund to increase research on treating sarcoma and other under-investigated forms of cancer.  In its 12 years of existence, the Ted Mullin Fund has raised a total of over $1 million for research, while the Hour of Power provides over to 60% of that fundraising effort annually.

Since its inception, the Hour of Power has grown to over 160 teams and an estimated 8,650 athletes, with participants spanning internationally and to “dry land” teams doing Hours of Power in ways suitable to their own sports.

The Tech Swimming and Diving teams have raised money through donations of parents, family and friends as well as collecting donations and selling team apparel.  More information and direct donations to the Ted Mullin Fund can be accessed here.
