Chicago, Ill. - Jackson Brass and Spencer Meace scored four goals, Ryan Arbour and Reed Tangeman each added three goals, Zane Handy made 13 saves, and the Illinois Tech men's lacrosse team defeated Monmouth College 17-9 Wednesday night at Stuart Field, in the Scarlet Hawks final match before conference play starts this Saturday. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 3-4 on the season. The Fighting Scots fell to 4-3.
The Scarlet Hawks will host MSOE Saturday afternoon at Stuart Field in their NACC opener.
The Scarlet Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, as four different Hawks scored in the first nine minutes. Monmouth scored a pair of goals in the last minute of the quarter, sandwiched around a Jonathan Vitale goal with 37 seconds remaining.
The Hawks also started strong in the second quarter, with Brock Melanson and Tangeman each scoring in the opening three minutes. The Scots answered back late in the quarter, outscoring the Hawks 3-1 in the final four minutes, including a goal by Michael Casey with two seconds remaining. Instead of entering the break up by five goals, the Hawks settled for an 8-4 lead.
The late period goal by the Scots seemed to inspire the Hawks play, as Meace and Brass each scored in the opening 58 seconds of the third quarter to push the Hawks lead to 10-4. The Hawks outscored the Scots 5-2 the rest of the quarter to lead 15-6.
After a scoreless first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, Tangeman and Meace scored at the eight-minute mark and the four-minute mark respectively to push the Hawks lead to 17-6. The Scots finished the quarter by scoring three unanswered goals, including a pair by Kain Donohoo, but it was not enough to overcame their deficit.
