Men's Soccer Defeats Ripon for First Win

CHICAGO, Ill. - On a night in which Illinois Tech dominated possession, the Scarlet Hawk men's soccer team defeated Ripon College on Wednesday by a score of 2-0. It was the first win of the season for the Scarlet Hawks and the second time Tech defeated Ripon in as many seasons.

Records

  • Ripon (2-3), Tech (1-4)

How it Happened

  • Possession heavily favored the Scarlet Hawks early on, as Tech attempted 10 shots in just the match's first 20 minutes. Ripon keeper Jimmy Amedeo saved six of those, while another shot from Santiago Bartolome hit off the crossbar.
  • Bartolome was able to find the back of the net, however, in the 27th minute. The sophomore took a pass from Mazen Al Hourani and shot it past Amedeo to give Tech a 1-0 lead.
  • The Scarlet Hawks continued to dominate possession as the half wound down, but Ripon held strong to keep the score the same at the intermission.
  • It did not take long for the Scarlet Hawks to add to the lead in the second half. After Anastasios Manolis stopped two Ripon shots to begin the frame, Al Hourani gave Noah Griffith a beauiful pass from midfield, lofting it over two defenders and setting up Griffith for the score.
  • With a 2-0 lead in tact, Tech continued to pepper Amedeo with shots. Despite a strong defensive effort, Ripon could not eat into Tech's lead or possession time, allowing the Scarlet Hawks to earn the victory.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Al Hourani's two assists, to go along with four shots and two shots on goal, made him a key catalyst for the match.
  • Griffith took for shots, led the team with three shots on goal, and scored.
  • Bartolome attempted three total shots and scored on his only shot on net.
  • Anastasios Manolis earned the win, making six saves.

For the Foes

  • Cameron Greene led the team with four shots.

Quote from Coach Colwell
