CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Tech men's swimming and diving team opened the 2018 portion of this season's schedule on a strong note at Keating Sports Center's Ekco Pool on Saturday. Behind several strong swims and a dominant season-best performance from Karsen Diepholz, the Scarlet Hawks defeated Lawrence University 199-49. The win moved the team to 6-3 in dual meets this season.
Meet Highlights
- Karsen Diepholz had the strongest swim of the day, setting a season-best time in the 1000 Yard Freestyle at 9:53.65. He won the race by nearly 50 seconds. He also won the 500 Yard Freestyle at 4:51.40.
- The Scarlet Hawks dominated the 100 Yard Butterfly, with Julian Escasa (53.63s), Ryan Escasa (54.17s), and Tyler Wan Vagener (54.81s) occupying the top three spots.
- Julian Escasa also won the 100 Yard Freestyle by nearly four seconds at 48.98s.
- Both relay races were tight between two Illinois Tech teams. In the 200 Medley, the squad of Matthew Randle, Jay Korhonen, Ryan Escasa, and Tyler Van Wagener won by .02 seconds (1:41.85). Tech's 200 Free team of Zachary Bonson, Diepholz, Ryan Escasa, and Seth Wissenbach won by .04 seconds at 1:33.31.
- Tech had the top two finishers in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, with Wissenbach (1:03.87) and Louis German (1:04.81) taking the top spots.
- Ryan Escasa and Korhonen also clocked in at the top of the leaderboard in the 200 Yard Butterfly, coming in at 1:59.84 and 2:01.12 respectively.
- In a tight 50 Yard Freestyle, Van Wagener (23.15s) and Wissenbach (23.28s) recorded the fastest times.
- Matthew Randle was strong in the 100 Yard Backstroke, winning with a time of 56.72s. He also won the 200 Yard Backstroke at 2:04.39.
- Korhonen dominated in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, winning by over eight seconds at 2:18.75. He was equally dominant in the 400 Yard IM, as his 4:17.71 time won by over 22 seconds.
