SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The Illinois Tech women's lacrosse season came to a close on Friday afternoon, as the second-seeded Scarlet Hawks (11-5) were defeated by the third-seeded Aurora Spartans (13-5) by a score of 13-8.
How it Happened
- Aurora started the match fast, with Christina Krokosz scoring twice in the game's first nine minutes before Alyssa DeLuca answered on a pass from Madison Meredith with 20:29 left in the half.
- After a Claire Carlson goal, Shanie Scoles tied the game up for Tech. The MWLC's Attacker of the Year scored two unassisted goals in a 32-second span to even the score at 3-3.
- Two minutes later, Scoles found a cutting DeLuca for Tech's first lead of the match.
- Aurora would re-take the lead behind goals from Marina Kanner and Janne Brown, but the Scarlet Hawks would answer strong. After Meredith scored with 5:59 left, Scoles put one final first-half tally on the board for Tech, taking advantage of an AU yellow card to put the Hawks ahead 6-5 at the intermission.
- The first 10 minutes of the second half swung the game in favor of Aurora, as the Spartans managed to rattle off five straight goals and control possession to go up 10-6.
- However, the Scarlet Hawks would not go down without a fight. Jennifer Young scored at the 19:22 mark before Meredith found Scoles again with 15:23 left. Just like that, the Scarlet Hawks trailed by just two.
- The Spartans were able to add three goals of insurance before time expired. Tech had its chances late, but AU keeper Reilly Armstrong was dominant down the stretch, making six second-half saves to help preserve the Spartan lead.
Scarlet Hawk Standouts
- Playing 52:45 of the 60:00 minutes in net, Jessica Cochis was great in net, making 12 saves.
- Scoles scored four times and added an assist with six draw controls.
- DeLuca had two goals and three caused turnovers.
- Meredith (three assists) and Young (five caused turnovers, four ground balls) each scored once.
- Tech's defense was flying all over the place, with Brooke Rowan (three), Marina Eraas (three), Mallory Tognetti (four), DeLuca (three), and Catherine Klemp (four) all joining Young with multiple caused turnovers.
Stats to Know
- There were a lot of turnovers in this one, with Aurora committing 31 compared to Tech's 36.
- Aurora won 12-11 on the draw and 34-24 in shots.
