Women's Volleyball Splits on Homecoming

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Tech women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match with Rockford University and St. Mary's College (Indiana) on Saturday. The Scarlet Hawks defeated Rockford 3-0 before falling to SMC 3-0.

Record

  • The Scarlet Hawks now hold a 5-6 record on the 2016 campaign.

How it Happened - Rockford

  • Rockford started fast in the first set, taking a 4-0 lead. However, the Hawks would answer back, taking a 9-8 lead and never relinquishing it en route to a 25-20 set win.
  • In set two, the Scarlet Hawks were in complete control. The Scarlet Hawks led 16-3 at one point and coasted to a 25-14 win behind a .364 hitting percentage
  • Set three was more of the same, as the Scarlet Hawks recorded a .294 hitting percentage and held the Regents to just a -.211 mark. Tech won the set 25-7.

How it Happened- St. Mary's

  • Set one was tight early, as no team led by more than two points until the Scarlet Hawks went on a 7-0 run to go up 12-7. However, the Belles slowly chipped away at the advantage and won 25-22.
  • In the second set, things were back and forth until a late Belles run. St. Mary's went on a 8-1 run to propel the team to a 25-19 win.
  • The third and final set was similar to the first two, as the Scarlet Hawks stayed close until a late burst from SMC gave the Bells a 25-18 clincher.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Taylor Burton continuted her strong freshman season with a team-high 10 kilis and hitting percentages of .636 and .389 in the matches. She also recorded three blocks in each match.
  • Irena Grauzinis built off of a good night on Friday with 15 total kills and 13 digs on the day.
  • Jelena Vujicic recorded nine total kills on the day and .476 hitting percentage against Rockford.
  • Freshman setter Courtney Darling added 43 assists on the day and had a 16-dig match against Rockford.
