Women’s Volleyball Defeated by Edgewood Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Illinois Tech women's volleyball team hosted the Eagles of Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon in the Keating Sports Center for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match. Tech (3-10, 1-3 NACC) fell to the Eagles (7-11, 4-2 NACC) in straight sets.

How it Happened

  • The Edgewood defense was impressive in the first set, holding the Scarlet Hawks to a hit percentage of just -.032% en route to the ten-point win.
  • Set two saw the Eagles get off to a strong start, leading by as many as five (8-3, 11-6). However, the Scarlet Hawks responded with an 11-3 run to take a 17-14 lead.
  • In what turned into a set of runs, the Eagles then scored the next six point to re-take the lead at 22-20. Tech then went on another 4-0 behind kills from Sinjin Acuna, Karen Marrufo-Zubaran, and Alyssa Miner to take a 24-22 advantage.
  • After the Eagles scored twice to tie it at 24-24, no team would be able to earn that two-point lead until a 3-0 Edgewood run gave the opponents a 31-29 win. Mia Phelps kept the Scarlet Hawks alive on two separate occasions with kills to tie the match.
  • While the Scarlet Hawks remained close throughout set three, Tech was never able to grab a lead. Edgewood never led by more than five, but was able to hold off the Scarlet Hawks for the win.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Phelps had a nice all-around match with eight kills, five digs, and three block assists.
  • Miner tallied six kills and a block assist from the middle position.
  • Allison Wilkins led the Scarlet Hawks with 14 assists.
  • Courtney Curcio was the team leader in digs with 15.

Stats to Know

  • Serving was not a strength for either team, with Edgewood and Tech combining for 23 service errors and just seven aces.
  • The Eagles hit .162% and tallied 36 kills. Illinois Tech hit .017% with 24 kills.
  • While the Scarlet Hawks forced the Eagles to dig out several blocks, Edgewood ended up ahead in the blocks category 7-3.
