Hawks Stumble In Sunday Double Header

Wheaton, Ill. - The Illinois Tech women's volleyball headed west to Wheaton for a double header match up with Wheaton College and Olivet College. The Hawks dropped the opening matchup with the host Thunder 3-0 and fell to the Comets in the afternoon match up 3-0.

  • Wheaton 3, Tech 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-23)

Match Highlights and Notes

  • Wheaton came out of the gates on fire as they scored 10 of the first 13 points of Set 1
  • After some back and forth, the Thunder took a commanding with 8 of the next 11 points to get up 18-6 and closed out a dominant first set win 25-11
  • Set 2 started quickly for the hosts at Wheaton but a quick response by the Hawks got the set to 5-5
  • The Hawks battled to a 13-12 lead but gave up a a 13-2 run to close out the set with a 25-15 Wheaton victory
  • Set 3 saw a back and forth battle with 11 ties but Tech unable to take the lead and lost a close set 25-23.
  • Sarah Hassell and Natalie Freund both put up 6 kills to lead the Hawk offense.
  • Courtney Darling had 16 assists and Sinjin Acuna had 21 digs to bolster the defense for the Hawks.

Match Highlights and Notes v. Kalamazoo

  • Similar to the morning match, the Hawks fell way behind to the Comets 9-2 in the first set and were unable to close the gap as they fell 25-17.
  • Tech fell behind in set 2 and battled to a 13-8 deficit but an 8 point run by Olivet put the set on ice as they cruised to the 25-13 win.
  • Set 3 saw an even opening series of points, the Hawks were able to build a 14-9 lead and kept pushing to a 21-19 lead but were unable to close it as Olivet scored 6 of the last 7 points to take the set 25-22
  • Justine Bracco, Jessica Weaver, and Sara Hassell each had 5 kills and Karen Marrufo Zubaran chipped in 4 in the second match.
  • Allison Wilkins lead the way in spreading the wealth with 12 assists
  • Courtney Darling was a staple on the defensive side of the net with 10 Assists and 12 digs.
  • Sinjin Acuna also contributed 11 digs in the second match
