David Nelson arrived at Illinois Institute of Technology as the sports information director in November 2019.

He came to Illinois Tech following three and a half years at Carthage College, where he was named the athletic communications manager in March 2016 before being elevated to Interim Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications in January 2019. Men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, men's and women's golf, women's basketball, men's and women's track & field, men's lacrosse, and softball were Nelson's primary sports as the athletic communications manager before he oversaw all 24 varsity athletic programs as the Interim Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications.

The Superior, Wisconsin native arrived at Carthage following a stint as the sports information graduate assistant at Black Hills State University (S.D.).

In his lone year at Black Hills State in 2015, Nelson was the primary contact for volleyball, women’s basketball, softball and rodeo. He served as the secondary contact for the remaining nine varsity athletic programs at BHSU. Implementing game notes, designing splash pages, social media oversight, statistical distribution, game recaps and press releases fell under Nelson’s watch at Black Hills State.

Nelson was the sports information assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Superior prior to his stay at Black Hills State. At Superior, Nelson played a large role in improving the public relations in the athletic department as they were without a full-time sports information director.

He also served as a team liaison at the 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four. He assisted eventual National Champion Elmira College with day-to-day operations such as travel, practice times and equipment. Nelson also served as the NCAA site representative at the University of Chicago Men's Soccer Regional on two occasions, in November 2016 and November 2017. Administrative/official conference calls, on-site administrative meetings, trophy presentations, and game administration were among Nelson's responsibilities as the NCAA site representative. Nelson also had a stint as the NCAA site representative at the University of Chicago Men's Tennis Regional in May 2018.

Nelson got his feet wet in the sports information field during his undergraduate studies at UW-Superior, where he was a student assistant his entire time there.

Nelson obtained a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a minor in sports management from UW-Superior in December 2013. He went on to earn a master of science degree in strategic leadership from Black Hills State University in July 2017.
