KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Tech baseball team played its last non-conference tune-up doubleheader on Friday, traveling to southeastern Wisconsin to oppose a strong Carthage College team. Tech fell to 8-6 on the season with losses of 13-3 and 15-0, moving the Red Men to a strong 15-3.
How it Happened - Game One
- It was a strong start to the contest for both starters, but the Red Men really got to Tech righthander James Tarala (3-1) in the third inning. After facing the minimum in the first two, Tarala allowed five runs on six hits in the inning to build a cushion.
- Before the Scarlet Hawks could get some offense going, the Red Men would plate four runs total between the fourth and fifth innings off Tech reliever Berto Carselle to bring the score to 9-0.
- Tech's bats awoke against Carthage starter Matt Willett (2-1) in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch after Ian Duke and Michael Courtney singles set the table. In the seventh, left fielder Nick Worden hit a two-out double to bring the score to 9-3.
- After a strong sixth inning form Joseph Hindy, the Carthage offense took advantage of two Tech errors in the seventh to score four more and bring the contest to a halt.
How it Happened - Game Two
- Carthage picked up right where it left off, using both power and speed to plate three runs on four hits in the first inning off Ryan Cantlin.
- The Red Men didn't waste any time in the second, loading the bases in the frame on the first three hitters before second baseman Ryan Kramer hit a grand slam to give Carthage a 7-0 lead.
- After the hosts plated another run in the fourth, the Red Men were able to get one more across in the ninth inning to make things 9-0.
- In the sixth, Carthage was able to plate six runs thanks to several hits, walks, and hits, leading the game its final of 15-0.
