MEQUON, Wis. - The Illinois Tech baseball team had its season come to a close on Friday, as the Scarlet Hawks (18-23) were defeated by the Sabres of Marian University (24-12) in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament. Tech dropped its contest to the Sabres by a final of 7-6 in 12 innings.

How it Happened

• The game was scoreless after two and a half innings of play. Tech had a great scoring chance in the first, with Marian right fielder Michael Snow robbing Brandon Bennitt of an RBI-extra base hit with two outs. Cantlin was strong through the first two frames, retiring all six hitters he saw.
• After the Sabres took a 3-0 lead after the third, Tech came right back. With two outs in the top of the fourth, catcher Enrique Acevedo singled to center field to drive in two runs.
• In the fifth, the Scarlet Hawks would take the lead. First, Michael Courtney made a nifty slide into home on a fielder's choice RBI from Nick Bledsoe. Then, Bennitt drove in pinch-runner Claudio LoBracio on a sacrafice fly.
• After Marian tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Tech continued to add to its tally in the sixth inning. Once again, Acevedo delivered, spacking another RBI single to center to give the Hawks the lead back. Acevedo then scored on Courtney's second double of the game as Tech went ahead 6-4.
• In the eighth, the Sabres tied the contest at 6-6. After Tech stranded Courtney at second following his third double, the team found itself in a jam in the ninth inning. However, Roberto Carselle was able to get out of the inning despite having bases loaded and a full count by getting a ground ball to first baseman Ted Howell.
• Both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring chances in the first two extra frames. Carselle once again worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th. In the 11th, Tech stranded Darius Jones at third base before Bennitt made a dazzling play to hold Marian scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The fresman second baseman snared a line drive, then dove to tag the second base bag to catch the runner napping.
• However, Marian would finally break the door down in the 12th inning, as catcher Nick Duganzic hit a two-out single to win the ballgame for the Sabres.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

• In the leadoff spot, Courtney was 3-for-6 with three doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
• Acevedo went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
• While Carselle took the loss, he went 3.1 innings in relief without allowing an earned run.
