CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Tech men's soccer team hosted its fourth straight home contest on Sunday evening, taking on the Pioneers of Carroll University (Wisconsin). Tech recorded its second consecutive shutout en route to a 3-0 victory.

How it Happened

  • Illinois Tech dominated possession early on, holding a 9-2 shot advantage for the first half. The efficiency paid off in the 28th minute when Norikazu Honda took a Brandon Bortei-Doku pass and fired it past the goalkeeper for the first tally of the match. It was Honda's first goal of 2017.
  • Defensively, Tech remained tight in the second half, allowing only three shot attempts for the Pioneers.
  • Tech attempted just five shots in the second half, but made the most of them. One of the five shots was a goal off the foot of Christopher Reed in the 62nd minute. Like Honda, it was his first 2017 goal.
  • With just five seconds remaining, the Scarlet Hawks capped off the win with another Bortei-Doku to Honda connection.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Honda's quickness was too much for the Pioneers. He scored twice on a team-high four shot attempts (three on net).
  • Bortei-Doku managed to assist on both of Honda's goals.
  • Reed scored on his only shot attempt.
  • Alex Kern earned his second win of the season and second straight shutout, making four saves.

Stats to Know

  • Fouls and yellow cards were aplenty on the evening. Carroll committed 20 fouls compared to Tech's 15. Each team was carded twice.
  • Carroll was shutout despite attempting eight corners. The Scarlet Hawks attempted two.
