2019 Women's Soccer Season Review

CHICAGO—The Illinois Institute of Technology women's soccer team's (13-7-2, 9-1-2 NACC) second season as a full NCAA Division III member saw them secure the No. 3 seed in the 2019 NACC Tournament. The Scarlet Hawks reached the semifinals, where they dropped a 5-3 decision to Concordia (Wis.). With just one senior on the 2019 roster, Illinois Tech set many benchmarks that paved the way for present and future success.

Award Season

Four Scarlet Hawks pulled down All-NACC honors, led by first-team selections Madison Harris and Jamie Griggs. Alexis Williamson secured a spot on the second team while Elena Esparcia Cañada earned honorable mention. Griggs secured Illinois Tech's lone NACC Offensive Player of the Week nod on September 1.

Statistically Speaking

The Scarlet Hawks recorded nine shutouts on the season, two of them occurred via a 0-0 tie. Offensively, Jamie Griggs continued to climb the Illinois Tech career records lists after she finished her sophomore campaign with 19 goals and four assists for 42 points. Griggs is currently ranked on the Scarlet Hawks career lists in goals (34, 4th), points (78, t5th), shots (117, 8th), shots on goal (67, 9th) and game-winning goals (9, 2nd). Her five game-winning goals in 2019 tied for a single-season record. Junior Julia Taliana, who finished the season with four goals and five assists for 13 points, also finds her name on the Illinois Tech career lists in goals (31, 6th), assists (21, 4th), points (83, 4th), shots (188, 4th), shots on goal (91, 4th) and game-winning-goals (7, t3rd). Sophomore Erin James currently holds the No. 7 spot on the career assists list with 17. 

Catherine Klemp anchored the Scarlet Hawks defense as she paced the goalies with a 0.88 goals against average and a .813 save percentage over 14 appearances. Klemp currently sits atop the Scarlet Hawks career lists in goals against average (1.18) and win percentage (.741). 

Streaking

The Scarlet Hawks held a nine-game unbeaten streak that began with a 4-1 win over Edgewood on September 28, and concluded with a 5-0 decision over Lakeland on October 23. The longest since opening the 2018 campaign with a 10-game unbeaten streak.

Dramatic Goals

Nicole Fajardo's goal in the 93rd minute in overtime propelled the Scarlet Hawks over Benedictine 1-0 in the 2019 NACC Tournament First Round on November 3. 

Special Senior

The Scarlet Hawks celebrated lone senior Madison Harris, who accumulated a 40-34-5 record over her four years.
