Women's Soccer Overpowers Edgewood 5-0 - Fanlo Nets Four Goals

Madison, Wis. – Clàudia Martí Fanlo scored 13 seconds into the match, and she did not stop scoring, totaling four goals on the afternoon as the Illinois Tech women's soccer team overpowered host Edgewood 5-0 Saturday afternoon in a key conference matchup in Madison. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 6-1-2 in NACC play, and 12-2-2 overall. The Eagles suffered their first loss in the conference, dropping to 7-1-1 in the NACC, and 11-2-1 overall.

The win allowed the Scarlet Hawks to move up to third place in the conference, with an opportunity to secure a top-two seed and a first-round bye in the NACC post-season tournament, with three conference games remaining.

How It Happened

  • The Scarlet Hawks took possession of the opening kick-off, and within 13 seconds they had a 1-0 lead. Kayla Smith took the ball in her zone up field along the right sideline, and sent a lofting through ball to Fanlo, who in one motion right-footed the ball while it was still in the air into the back of the of the net.
  • A little over seven minutes later, Illinois Tech doubled their lead to 2-0. Amelia Moseman, coming down the right sideline, sent a through ball to Fanlo, who pushed it past oncoming Eagles goalkeeper Kailey Adamski into the left side of the net.
  • The Scarlet Hawks struck quickly in the second half. Gabriella Baltes stole a ball high in the Eagles zone, raced down the middle and fired a right-footer 25 yards out into the left corner of the Eagles net for a 3-0 Illinois Tech lead.
  • Fanlo tallied her third goal of the match at the 63:35 mark. Moseman centered a ball to Fanlo inside the box. She was able to navigate through two defenders and maintain possession, kicking the ball into the left corner of the net for a 4-0 Hawks lead.
  • Fanlo completed the scoring with her fourth goal of the match a little over five minutes later. Scarlet Hawks goalkeeper Sarah Thomas cleared the ball out of Hawks' territory with a deep kick that Kelly Hitchcock pulled down. She spun around her defender and sped down the middle, pushing a through ball to her left that Fanlo received, cut inside, and blasted a right-footer at the top of the box that went off the right post and into the net for the final 5-0 margin of victory.
