Milwaukee, WI - In the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) Semifinals, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks traveled to take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders. The battle between the third seeded Hawks and second seeded Raiders saw some free soccer when the two sides ended regulation in a 2-2 side. With 52 seconds remaining in the game, Amelia Moseman scored the game winner, giving the Hawks a 3-2 victory and securing the Hawks spot in the NACC Championship game!

How it Happened

  • MSOE took the lead in the first half with a goal in the 18th minute. Addison Spilman gave the Raiders their goal off an Olivia Carroll assist. After Reagan Tompkins saved a Hawk shot, she quickly rolled out the ball to an open Raider. Sending the ball up the field with one touch, Carroll received the ball deep into the Hawks defensive half. With the ball making its way past both Carroll and the Hawk defender, Carroll was able to adjust her run to get control of the ball. With her first touch placing her at the top of the 18-yard box, Carroll fired a shot at goal. An oncoming Hailey Flannagan made the initial save, but unfortunately for the Hawks, the ball rolled right to a wide open Spilman. Spilman took a set up touch before sending the ball into net, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The Raiders lead would last for the remainder of the first half.

  • After halftime, the Hawks found energy as they would go on to score two goals, seven minutes apart. In the 63rd minute, Clàudia Martí Fanlo notched the the Hawks first goal off a Kelly Hitchcock assist. Receiving a high, airbourne ball, Hitchcock slowed the ball down, but sent it back in the air. Luckily, Martí Fanlo was on the receiving end as she was able to bring the ball down before taking a half-volley shot. As Martí Fanlo's shot looked as if it was going to be too high, it perfectly dropped between the crossbar and Raider goalkeeper, giving the Hawks the tying goal, making it 1-1.

  • Martí Fanlo then netted her second goal in the 70th minute to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. A throw-in in the Hawks defensive half got the play started. After bouncing around, the ball landed at the feet of Martí Fanlo, who played a give-and-go to get into space. Receiving the ball with a Raider defender coming at her, Martí Fanlo took a big touch to send the ball inside the 18-yard box, and used her speed to get the ball. Running at full pace, Martí Fanlo used one touch to shoot the bouncing ball low and into the back of the net to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead, their first lead of the match.

  • With 23 seconds remaining in the game, the Raiders tied the game up with a goal by Maggie Thillman, assisted by Nicole Robb. After a foul, a free kick in the middle of the Hawks defensive half was awarded to the Raiders. Robb took the free-kick for the Raiders, sending the ball right to the penalty kick area where Thillman was awaiting. Thillman jumped and was able to flick the ball with her head into the near post corner to score the last second tying goal for the Raiders.

  • The 2-2 tie at the end of regulation sent the two sides into two 10 minute overtimes halves. If no goal were to be scored, the Hawks and Raiders would face-off in a penalty shootout.

  • A scoreless first overtime half sent the Hawks and Raiders into the final 10 minutes of action.

  • With 52 seconds remaining in the match, Moseman would go on to score the game winning goal. Intercepting a Raider clearance, Allison Murray gained control of the ball at half-field for the Hawks. Murray dribbled the ball forward with one-touch before laying the ball off to Moseman. Moseman took one-touch,sending the ball down the field, before shooting a high sailing shot towards goal. Similar to the Hawks first goal, the shot seemed as if it were sent too high before it dipped down, going in between the crossbar and Raider goalkeepers hands and into the back of the net. Moseman's goal secured the Hawks place in the NACC Championships!
