Weekly Preview: First Week of October

CHICAGO, Ill.- October gets off to a fast start for Illinois Institute of Technology athletics. Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, and Men’s Soccer will all compete this week, with Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Soccer playing at home.

Women’s Volleyball (7-5) comes home from a 2-2 trip to Kentucky to host three matches in two days. On Friday night, Maranatha Baptist University will visit Keating Sports Center for a 7:00 p.m. match. The next day, the Scarlet Hawks will host a tri-match with Mount Mary and Grace Bible starting at 2:00 p.m. (Tech will compete at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.).

Maranatha presents one of the team’s toughest tests of the season, as the Sabercats come into this week at 10-5 and on a six-match winning streak. Grace Bible is currently 5-4, while Mount Mary is 1-8.

Women’s Soccer (4-3-2) is in the midst of five straight road contests and will follow up a 2-1 victory at Anderson (Ind.) on Saturday with two matches away from Chicago. Tech will travel to Rock Island, Ill. to oppose Augustana College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. before making the trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face Carlow University.

Both teams present a challenge to the Scarlet Hawks. Augustana is one of top teams in Division III, boasting a 7-2 record and averaging 4.7 goals per game. Carlow currently ranks seventh in the latest USCAA poll and is 3-3 on the year.

Men’s Soccer (5-4-1) comes off of Sunday’s 4-0 win over Wentworth Military to host Elmhurst College on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The team will then head to Watertown, Wis. to take on Maranatha on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Elmhurst is 1-6-1 thus far and has dropped two straight matches. Maranatha is coming off of a 2014 NCCAA Division II Championship and currently holds a 3-3 record.
