Baseball Grabs the Win in Extra Innings

Baseball Grabs the Win in Extra Innings

Tucson, Ariz. - Another split on the second day of the trip for the Scarlet Hawks makes them 2-2 overall on the season. The Hawks played two games against two different opponents Marian University (Wis.) and University of Wisconsin-Superior both scheduled for 9 inning contests. It took extra baseball for IIT to get the win 4-3 against Marian in 10 innings of game one for the day. The Hawks then fell to Superior 9-6 in game two.

The Hawks scored one run in the 4th inning, 2 in the seventh and then the one that really mattered in the 10thAustin Boos and Ryan Fitzpartick (SR, Chicago, Ill) both added two hits and a run scored. Sam Pung (JR, Ludington, Mich.) had two hits as Mike Malfeo (SR, Orland Park, Ill), Alex Babusci (SR, Park Ridge, Ill.) and Darwin Argumedo (SR, Cartegena, Columbia) each hit safely once. Brian Colon (JR, Carolina, PR) had one hit but also scored two runs. In the winning inning Colon reached by error, then Bill Cronin moved the runner with a sacrifice bunt, Pung singled moving Colon to third base, Babusci reached on error that scored Colon.

Mike Malfeo was called upon again to close out the game.  Marian's first hitter reached base on an error then as the next batter attempted to sacrifice bunt the runner over Malfeo hopped off the mound to get the force out at second and keep the tying run from getting into scoring position. Next a fly out to second base for the second out was followed by a single to move the ever important runner to second. Malfeo however finished the job by striking out the final hitter.

The pitching from starter Kyle Bumpass (SO, Crete, IL) of 7.0 very strong innings from the transfer from NCAA DII Dominican College proved to be crucial for the Hawks. Kyle allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), with 4 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Cory Winiecki (SO, Des Plaines, Ill.) then took the mound for 2.0 innings in relief only giving up 1 hit with no runs and one strikeout. Malfeo as mentioned above went 1.0 innings with 1 hit, no runs and 1 strikeout.
