Scarlet Hawks Hit the 20-Win Mark

Chicago, Ill – Illinois Tech Baseball sweeps Finlandia University in the double header over the weekend, with scores of 12-1 and 16-0. This takes the Hawks to 20-6 on the season, it also makes the first time IIT Baseball has reached 20 wins in a single season since 2009.

 

Game 1

 

James Tarala (4-1) went the distance for the winning decision. His 7.0 innings he allowed 1 run (not earned) on a complete game 2 hitter. Tarala missed a complete game shutout by the unearned run scoring off an error in the 2nd inning.

Austin Boos and William Cronin both led the way with hits and from the leadoff and second hitter in the lineup. Each with 3 hits Boos had a triple and Cronin had a double of those hits. Both men also scored 3 times each and Cronin had 2 runs batted in (RBI). Michael Malfeo, Brian Colon-Rodriguez, Alex Babusci, Kyle Bumpass, and Sam Pung all hit safely as well.

Tech scored 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, 3 in the 4th, and 3 more in the 5th.

 

Game 2

 

Matthew Bishop was awarded the win in his scheduled 2.0 innings of work. The second game was specifically split up among some Hawks pitchers that had not seen the mound in a few games. In his work Bishop allowed no runs on 1 hit with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Cory Winiecki pitched the 3rd inning with a clean frame, no runs, no hits and a strikeout. Next was Andrew Lamkin with the exact same, no runs, no hits, and one strikeout. Andrew Gustafson pitched the 5th giving up just 1 hit but no runs, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Jan Timpe pitched a clean 6th inning with no runs, no hits and 1 strikeout. While the usual closer Michael Malfeo did pitch the last inning but it was a non-save opportunity. Malfeo allowed no runs on 1 hit, with 2 strikeouts. Game 2 was a combined 3 hitter effort with 10 strikeouts but the Hawks pitching staff.

At the plate Austin Boos was the top guy with 3 hits (one double), 1 run scored and 6 RBI. Brian Colon-Rodriguez and Ryan Fitzpatrick both had 2 hits each, Colon with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Fitzpatrick also drove in 2 RBI. Cronin, Babusci, Bumpass, and Darwin Argumedo all hit safely once. At the end of the day the IIT bats ended with 28 runs on 22 hits in the 2 games.

Next up is Dominican University who plays its home games at the Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.
