Hawks Defeated in Double-header Against Kenyon

Gambier, Ohio - In the final non-conference games until April 25th, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks baseball team took the field against the Kenyon College Owls for the second day in a row on Sunday. Originally, the games were scheduled to be played on March 25th, but were rescheduled due to weather.

The Hawks (7-8) looked to continue where they left off from the previous day's games. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Owls (11-5) had other plans in mind. In game one, the Owls defeated the Hawks 11-0 in seven innings. Game two also went seven innings with the score reading 18-4 in favor of the Owls. 

Game One (Kenyon 11 - Illinois Tech 0) - 7 innings

  • In the bottom of the first, third, and fourth innings, the Owls tallied one run each to take a 3-0 lead over the Hawks at the end of the fourth. 

  • The Owls sealed their victory in the bottom of the sixth with an 8-run inning. 

 

Game Two (Kenyon 18 - Illinois Tech 4) - 7 innings

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Owls took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. 

  • In the top of the third, the Hawks got their first run of the day. After 2 outs, Tyler Gutsfeld walked. Then, on a wild pitch, Gutsfeld made his way to second. Gutsfeld then scored when Connor Blake singled to center field, put the Hawks on the board. At the end of the third inning, the Hawks trailed the Owls 4-1.

  • The Owls took a 7-1 lead at the end of the fourth inning.

  • At the top of the fifth, Ivan Tejeda got things going with a single to left field. Gutsfeld then doubled, putting him on second and Tejeda on third. Blake then stepped up to bat and homered to left center field.

  • In the bottom of the fifth the Owls would add one run to their score. Here, the Owls led the Hawks 8-4.

  • 10 runs were scored by the Owls in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure their lead. The Hawks were unable to get any offense going in the top of the seventh and fell to the Owls 18-4.

  • Gutsfeld had 2 runs and 1 hit (a double) in 3 at-bats.

  • Blake tallied 3 hits and 1 run in his 3 at-bats, including a double and a homerun. Blake recorded 4 RBI's.

  • Samuel Sproule picked up two stolen bases. 

Owls Standouts

Game One

  • In 3 at-bats, Nate Rosen had 3 runs and 3 hits. Rosen recorded one double. 

  • Stephen Carr had 4 at-bats, 1 run, 2 hits, and 2 RBI's.

  • Edwin Groff and Tripper Capps also provided 2 RBI's for the Owls.  

Game Two

  • Rosen finished with 5 at-bats, 3 runs, 4 hits, and 2 RBI's.

  • Groff had 2 runs, 4 hits, and 3 RBI's in 5 at-bats.

  • Drew Robinson finished with 2 at-bats, 3 runs, 2 hits (including a homerun), and 5 RBI's.

Up Next

The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome the Aurora University Spartans to Ed Glancy Field for a doubleheader. Saturday's games will mark the first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games of the 2023 season. Game one is scheduled to have first pitch at 12:00 p.m., with game two to follow.
