Men's Basketball Drops Season's First Overtime Game

CHICAGO, Ill.- Illinois Institute of Technology men's basketball hosted Iowa's Coe College on Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Hawks took the talented Kohawks to overtime, but ultimatley fell 89-85.

How it Happened

  • Coe built leads of 11-5 and 18-11 early before the Scarlet Hawks took control. Tech took its first lead since 4-3 on a Matt Peters jumper to go up 23-22 with 7:18 left in the first half.
  • The two teams traded leads over the next five minutes, but a Jake Bruns three-pointer gave the Hawks a one-point lead with two minutes left in the first half. Tech protected the advantage and led 40-36 at halftime.
  • In the second half, Samuel Rarick scored seven of Tech's first nine points, but Coe took a 50-49 lead with 15:48 left. Parker Joncus answered with a three-pointer to give Tech the lead back, which would hold until late in the contest. 
  • After the Scarlet Hawks built an eight-point lead, the Kohawks slowly fought back to tie the score at 75-75 with 1:16 remaining. Teams traded free throws the next two times down the floor before Anthony Mosley Jr. hit two more with 41 seconds left. 
  • Jacob Timm of Coe made a jumper with 33 seconds left to tie the score at 79-79, giving Tech one last look in regulation. Mosley missed a jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime.
  • The teams traded leads once again until Marshall Shedeck put Coe back on top 86-85 with 1:13 remaining. The Coe defense tightened up, denying Rarick twice and Mosley once down the stretch to hold the lead. Coe made three of four free throws as time wound down to win 89-85.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Mosley Jr. led all scorers with 23 points.
  • Jake Digiorgio tallied 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
  • Rarick scored 15 points, all of which came after halftime. He also totaled four steals.
  • Jason Morris scored eight points and added a team-high six assists.

Kohawk Mentions

  • Matt Meyer led with 18 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the first half.

  • This was the first overtime game of the season for both teams.
  • Both teams hit 34 shots from the field, but Tech attempted five more field goals (72 to 67).
