Slow Start Leads to Men's Basketball Loss Thursday

WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Illinois Institute of Technology men's basketball team made the trip north to Maranatha Baptist University on Thursday night to oppose the Sabercats for the second time this season. MBU won the close matchup 50-46.

How it Happened

  • The Sabercats jumped out ahead early on, taking a 16-2 lead at the 11:50 mark. A Jake Bruns three-point field goal with 11:23 left ended a drought for the Scarlet Hawks that lasted over six minutes.
  • Tech's offense began to click down the stretch of the first half. The Scarlet Hawks were able to cut MBU's deficit down to five with 5:03 left. After the Sabercats extended the lead back out to 11, baskets from Ryan Barnes and Matt Peters in the final minute of the half pulled Tech to within seven, 29-22, at the break.
  • The second half started in MBU's favor, jumping back out ahead by double-digits. However, the Scarlet Hawks slowly cut into the deficit and took a 42-41 lead at the 4:24 mark on a jumper from Anthony Mosley Jr.
  • Maranatha's defense clamped down, allowing just two Mosley layups for the rest of the game as the Sabercats retook the lead. A Mosley Jr. layup didn't fall with 37 seconds to go, allowing MBU to push the lead to two possessions and seal the victory.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Mosley Jr. continued his magnificent freshman season, tallying 21 points (ninth straight contest over 20) to go along with six rebounds, two assists, three steals, and four blocks.
  • Peters notched seven points in 20 minutes off the bench

Stats to Know

  • Both teams struggled from the floor, with Tech (33.9%) slightly outdoing the Sabercats (32.8%).
  • The woes were much of the same from three-point land. Tech was just 3-of-15 (20%), while MBU finished 2-of-12 (16.7%).
  • Tech won the battle of the boards 45-43.
  • Maranatha committed just 11 turnovers compared to Tech's 17.
