HOLLAND, MICH.—The Illinois Institute of Technology men's basketball team squared-off against Olivet College in a match between 1-7 squads at the Hope College Russ DeVette Holiday Classic in Holland, Michigan on Friday. Max Hisatake, who recorded his sixth double double of the season with 23 points and 17 rebounds, pulled down his 900th career rebound in the Scarlet Hawks' 73-59 victory over Olivet. He also notched a season-high five assists in the contest.
Hisatake now carries 1,033 points and 902 boards over his four-year career at IIT. Miles Curry added 18 points and seven boards for the Scarlet Hawks while Otis Reale (16) and Milos Dugalic (11) rounded out the double-figure scorers.
The Illinois Tech starting five scored all but one point in the contest, which saw them record a stellar 28-56 (.500) field goal percentage and a 6-12 (.500) three-point mark. The Comets, who were led by Eddie Thigpen's 17 points, shot a dismal 2-17 (.118) mark from beyond the arch.
The victory ups IIT's record to 2-7 overall while Olivet falls to 1-8.
The Scarlet Hawks either tied or led from start-to-finish as their stingy defense held Olivet to a dreadful 4-14 shooting mark within the opening 10:00 minutes of play that resulted in a 13-8 edge. Thigpen responded with a layup for Olivet at the 9:37 mark of the first to cut their deficit to 13-10, but the gap didn't close further as Otis Reale recorded seven points in IIT's 18-8 run that pushed their lead to 31-18 at halftime.
The Comets came back with a 16-30 (.533) shooting mark in the second half, where eight different players recorded points. It wasn't enough arsenal as IIT recorded a 73-59 win.
The Scarlet Hawks will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, December 28 against tournament host Hope College at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
