Tech Men's Soccer Fall 3-2 in Double Overtime

Notre Dame, IN – The Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks withstood a double-overtime defeat to Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. After a tense 90 minutes which saw the Hawks equalize twice, it took a Garbhan Grant strike deep into the second overtime period to finally separate the two teams.

Early the Hawks were tested with some early pressure from the home side and numerous scoring chances. In the 13th minute, Holy Cross' Garbhan grabbed his first of the afternoon.  The visitors had a few chances  but none fell until the 41stminute when Tech's Nordine Amlaiky found the back of the net to tie up the scores. Amlaiky found room on the edge of the box after a pass inside from freshman,Tommy Gasienica.

Chances continued to flow in the second half as both teams searched for the decisive score. It was Holy Cross who found a second goal through a free kick by danger man Garbhan. The 55 yard cross-turned-shot passed goalkeeper, EJ Yang as sailed it sailed over his head and into the back of the net.

With 17 minutes to go, the Hawks showed tremendous spirit to push forward and were rewarded with 8 minutes to go as Amlaiky slammed home his second of the afternoon. IIT senior, Robert Rixer dribbled inside and playing a pass to Amlaiky who's first time shot sizzled past the goalkeeper and into the net to level the scores.

IIT's Timi Akindele and Roman Zwarycz had late chances on goal to seal the game for the visitors but failed to capitalize as the time expired. The Hawks were in a familiar situation with this being the 5th overtime period in 11 games this season. However it wasn't meant to be this time around as man of the match Garbhan sealed his hat-trick and the game in the 107th minute.

The Hawks will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 16th when they take on Purdue-Calumet in Munster, Indiana. The overtime defeat pulls the Hawks to 4-4-3 on the season.
