Men's Soccer Wins 2-1 in OT on Golden Goal by Meier

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Illinois Tech found a dramatic game winning goal in the first overtime after a dominating performance. Senior defender Rex Meier buried a header off a corner from freshman midfielder Nori Honda, four minutes into the first overtime for the golden goal winner.

The Scarlet Hawks had to weather a controversial penalty kick awarded to the host Kohawks in the 6th minute of the contest. Illinois Tech would find the deserved equalizer in the 29th minute on an amazing individual effort from Junior Irewole Akande.

Despite a 15-2 advantage in shots in the first half, the game would remain knotted a 1-1 going into the break. The Scarlet Hawks would dominate the possession throughout the second half as well but could not find the winner.

The game then went into overtime, setting up the heroics from Meier. Illinois Tech finished with a 35-9 shot advantage and 7-0 in corners. Goalkeeper EJ Yang made 1 save on the afternoon but it was an extended tip save off the crossbar to help preserve the win.

The Tech men improve to 4-0-1 on the season. They host Anderson University on Friday, September 19th at 8 pm CST. On Sunday, they play host to Eureka College at 3:30 pm CST.
