The season started off successfully for the Illinois Institute of Technology men's soccer team, as the Scarlet Hawks down the Regents of Rockford University 5-1 Tuesday afternoon.
How It Happened
- Rockford started the scoring off in the 17th minute, scoring off of a set piece. Erik Manriquez headed a Johnathan Hernandez free kick past the Tech defense to put Rockford up 1-0
- Eight minutes later, Noah Griffith responded with an unassisted tally. He fired a shot from 17 yards out past Anthony Beck to tie things up at 1.
- The Scarlet Hawks really amped up the offense after the 30th minute, scoring twice in a two minute span to build a two-goal halftime lead. Lucas Niehuns Antues scored off a deflection in the 33rd minute, and two ticks later, Sergio Calvo de Leon netted a goal from 20 yards out.
- In the second half's 15th minute, Griffith would notch his second goal on a cross from Niehuns Antunes.
- Diego Gutierrez Coronel rounded out the scoring in the 72nd minute off an assist from Norikazu Honda.
Scarlet Hawk Standouts
- Noah Griffith (So.) netted two goals on five shots and four shots on goal
- Sergio Calvo de Leon (Sr.) scored once on five shots and two shots on goal
- Lucas Niehuns Antunes (Fr.) record a goal on three shots (all on goal) in his collegiate debut
- Anastasios Manolis (Fr.) earned the win in net, only seeing two shots on goal in the contest
Stats to Know
- Illinois Tech outshot Rockford 15-4 on the day
- Corner kicks also favored the Scarlet Hawks, holding the advantage 9-4 behind a 6-0 first half tally
- Each team recorded one yellow card, with fouls also being pretty even (19 Rockford, 17 Illinois Tech)
