Men's Soccer Opens Home Schedule with a Tie

CHICAGO, Ill.- Illinois Institute of Technology men's soccer opened the season on Saturday afternoon as a part of the Illinois Tech Tournament. The Scarlet Hawks tied with Manchester University 1-1 at Stuart Field.

How It Happened

  • Both goalkeepers were peppered with shots early, as the teams combined for eight shots in the match's first 15 minutes (five for Tech, three for Manchester).
  • In the 20th minute, Manchester was able to score the lone goal of the half. Tod Oram lofted a beautiful pass from midfield to lead Travis Richardson for the tally.
  • Tech had some chances in the first half with 12 shots, including missed chance on cross in front of the net, and another on an offside call.
  • The Scarlet Hawks dominated possession in the second half, which paid off come the 74th minute. Sergio Calvo de Leon fired a shot home to tie the score at one off a pass from Brandon Bortei-Doku
  • Manchester was able to hold off a strong Tech offense in the final minutes to send the game into overtime.
  • Tech had a great chance in the 87th minute when Bortei-Doku set up Mazen Al Hourani, but Brady Forman made a teriffic save to keep the score tied.
  • Both teams were able to get shots off in the final seconds of the first overtime, but both Forman and Anastasios Manolis made impressive stops. Overtime number two was also tightly contested

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Calvo de Leon scored the lone goal for Tech, firing eight shots and four on net
  • Noah Griffith led the Hawks with nine shots, three of which were on goal
  • Bortei-Doku had three shots on top of his assists and made several plays with the ball
  • Aided by Bart Grabowski and the defense, Manolis stopped seven shots in net

For the Foes

  • Forman made eight stops as keeper
  • Tod Oram had four shots and an assist
  • Richardson (one goal) and Ola Ladapo each tallied three shots

Stats to Note

  • Illinois Tech outshot Manchester 31-17 for the contest and 9-3 in the two overtime periods
  • Manchester totaled 27 fouls compared to just 15 for the Scarlet Hawks
  • Tech also hed a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks
