Tech Downs Tough Lake Forest Team in Overtime

CHICAGO, Ill.- The Illinois Institute of Technology men's soccer team (6-6-1) hosted a tough opponent in Lake Forest College on Friday night. In an entertaining, back-and-forth match, the Scarlet Hawks prevailed 4-3 on a game-winning goal in overtime by Juan Arjona Belmonte.

How it Happened

  • Tech did not start the contest slow, as the Hawks controlled possession early and scored in the sixth minute. Lucas Niehuns Antunes scored his second goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Lake Forest, who came into the contest averaging over three goals per match, would show why they've been a strong offensive team this season. The Foresters tallied three unanswered goals down the stretch of the first half, with two coming from Nipun Chauhan (eighth and 20th minutes) and one from Dylan Harmtan (26th minute).
  • Tech, however, would strike once more before the halftime horn. In the midst of a jump ball in front of the net, contact from Niehuns Antunes and Norikazu Honda directed the ball to Bart Grabowski, who scored his first goal of the season on a header.
  • The second half was much more defensive-oriented, but that wouldn't stop the Scarlet Hawks from tying the contest in the 78th minute. Off of a set piece, Noah Griffith notched his first assist on the season on a goal from Sergio Calvo de Leon
  • In overtime, Arjona Belmonte and Honda checked in off the bench just before the 97th minute. Just a few seconds after entering, Honda had a breakaway down the left side. After a cross to Calvo de Leon, Arjona Belmonte took a pass and fired it into the net for a Illinois Tech winner.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Niehuns Antunes led Tech in shots (six) and shots on goal (three) and was one of two Scarlet Hawks to tally both a goal and an assist (Calvo de Leon).
  • Calvo de Leon attempted five shots as well.
  • The defense, led by Grabowski (two shots, one goal) and Ryan Blackburn stifled the Lake Forest offense in the second half.
  • Arjona Belmonte scored the game-winner on his only shot.
  • Anastasios Manolis corraled six saves, standing out on set pieces.

Lake Forest Mentions

  • Chauhan led with two goals.
  • Four of five shots taken by Cesar Sandoval were on net.
