Men Race to Fourth Place at Phoenix Fall Classic

Chicago, Illinois - The Scarlet Hawk men swam to an overall fourth place out of six this past weekend at the University of Chicago's 6th Annual Phoenix Fall Classic. 

Day One of the meet began with the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Tanner Grieve, Luke Workman, Connor McGuire and Billy Bafia finishing with third place points in a time of 1:31.07. Junior Kevin Boldt was the runner-up in the Men's 1650 Freestyle, finishing with a time of 17:35.53. Teammate Tristan Busch also competed in the mile and finished fifth with a time of 19:24.83.

Jay Korhonen started off the second day of the meet with a strong sixth place finish in the 200 Individual Medley, breaking two-minutes for the first time this season with a final time of 1:59.38. Other remarkable swims on Day Two included Boldt's fourth place finish in 500 Freestyle (4:56.22), Workman's eighth place finish in the 500 Freestyle (5:00.69), Bafia's ninth place swim in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.96), Joe Valio's 200 Backstroke swim to 11th place (2:12.05), Grieve's fifth place finish in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:03.89, and Matt Williams' eighth place finish in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:23.77. 

Korhonen led the way again on the final day of the meet, with a second place finish in the 400 Individual Medley (4:15.41) and a ninth place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:15.19).  The Scarlet Hawks had three men qualify in the 200 Freestyle: Boldt finished fourth (1:48.51), Workman finished eighth (1:49.01) and Busch finished 15th (1:55.44). Valio then swam a lifetime best in the preliminaries of the 100 Backstroke (57.47) and finished seventh at finals in the same event with a time of 58.26. 

The Scarlet Hawks impressive showing at this invitational led to collegeswimming.com ranking them as the number one team in the Liberal Arts Championship Conference.

The men will next face Lincoln College and Manchester University in an invitational meet held at Ekco Pool on December 6, 2014 at 1pm. At this meet, Senior Billy Bafia will be recognized for his outstanding contributions and commitment to Illinois Tech Swimming.
