Korhonen Sets Pool Record, Scarlet Hawks Hold Strong at Liberal Arts Championships

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Men's Swimming and Diving team currently sits in fourth place after the third full day of competition at the Liberal Arts Championships. The Scarlet Hawks, with 302 points, are in a tight race with Morningside College (315 points) and Luther College (331.5 points) for the runner-up spot at the championship. Franklin College currently leads the meet overall with 500.5 points.

The 200 Medley Relay climbed a spot from their seed to finish fifth. The team of Ray Mohaimani, Billy Bafia, Tanner Grieve and Luke Workman posted a finished the race with a final time of 1:38.18, just a tenth of a second behind Nebraska Wesleyan University (1:38.08) and less than four-tenths of a second behind Loras College (1:37.80).

Freshman standout Jay Korhonen won the 400 Individual Medley in record-setting fashion with a final time of 4:08.08. His first place swim marks the first individual conference champion for the Scarlet Hawks this weekend, and also broke the Coe College Natatorium pool record, formerly held by Illinois Tech's Michael Bodzay (4:09.73).

The great swims continued with Grieve's 100 Butterfly, where he finished sixth overall with a time of 53.30. Workman and Kevin Boldt then competed in the 200 Freestyle where they finished in fifth and seventh respectively. Workman touched the wall in 1:45.83 and Boldt finished just behind in 1:47.04.

Bafia swam his final 100 Breaststroke of his four-year carrer, and finished third overall with an impressive 58.96. The swim marked the first time that Bafia had broken the 59-second mark in the individual event. Fellow Senior, Mohaimani also had an impressive final 100 Backstroke, as he finished in sixth overall with a final time of 55.71. Joe Valio also competed in the 100 Backstroke and finished tenth with a final time of 56.31.

The Scarlet Hawk Men closed out the evening with a stellar performance in the 800 Freestyle Relay. The team of Workman, Grieve, Korhonen and Boldt finished the race in second place with a final time of 7:07.15. Luther College came in third place with a time of 7:11.30 and Franklin College took the title in 6:52.63.
