Men’s Tennis Wins NACC Tournament, Qualifies for NCAA Division III Tournament

MADISON, Wis. – The top-seeded and regionally-ranked Illinois Tech men's tennis team competed in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament Semifinals and Championship on Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Center on the campus of UW-Madison. After defeating Edgewood 5-0 in the morning, the Scarlet Hawks clinched a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament with a NACC Tournament Championship. Tech defeated the second-seeded Concordia-Wisconsin Falcons by a score of 5-0 as well. Men's Tennis is the first team in Illinois Tech history to win both an NACC Tournament and reach the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Match Highlights – Edgewood Match

  • With a victory in #3 doubles on default, Tech took care of business in both #1 and #2 doubles.
  • Franklin Zhong and Pol de Santiago were battled closely early on in the No. 1 spot, but the duo found its groove mid-match and went on to win 8-4.
  • In No. 2 doubles, Yousef Abdo and Mohammed Shamel took control early on and never relinquished momentum. The pair of Egypt natives went on to win 8-3.
  • With Edgewood defaulting No. 5 and No. 6 singles as well, Tech already had five matches locked up before singles even began.

Match Highlights – Concordia-Wisconsin Match

  • All three doubles matches went Tech's way.
  • After Brody Croonquist/Davis Housman (No. 3, 8-2) and de Santiago/Zhong (No. 1, 8-5) wrapped up, Abdo/Shamel hung on to win 8-5 in No. 2.
  • In singles, all six Scarlet Hawks won their first set of games: de Santiago in No.1, Zhong in No. 2, Abdo in No. 3, Housman in No. 4, Adam Laitinen in No. 5, and Shamel in No. 6.
  • It was then a race to completion for the Scarlet Hawks. Finishing first was Housman, as he won earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 4.
  • The conference clincher came courtesy of Shamel in No. 6. After winning 6-3 in the first set of games, he won 6-2 to give Tech the 5-0 victory.
