Men’s Volleyball Takes Set in Doubleheader Loss

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Illinois Institute of Technology men's volleyball team continued play at the Loras Invitational on Saturday, taking on host Loras and Briar Cliff. Tech fell to the Duhawks 3-0 before taking a set against Briar Cliff in a 3-1 defeat.

How it Happened

  • Facing Loras for the second time this season, the Scarlet Hawks struggled in the opening set against the hosts, allowing the Duhawks to jump out to an early advantage to win 25-13.
  • Tech battled the Duhawks in the final two sets and led in the early portions of the third set, but fell 25-19 and 25-18 in a 3-0 Loras win.
  • Against Briar Cliff, Tech won its first set in program history, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 win. The Scarlet Hawks fought back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 9-8 lead. Briar Cliff took the lead right back and captured it for most of the match, but Tech would not go away, reclaiming the lead at 24-23 and holding on for the win.
  • Briar Cliff built early leads in the next three sets as well. This time, BC was able to hang on, winning 25-19, 25-10, and 25-16.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Alex Babusci built off yesterday's performance with another two matches with double-digit kills, recording 12 in both matches.
  • Andrew Woltman tallied 21 assists against the Duhawks and 27 against BC.
  • Paulo Sassmannschausen recorded two aces against Loras.
  • Filip Letkiewicz collected two blocks in each match.
  • Ryan Barnes recorded his first 10 kills of the season against Briar Cliff with a .474 hitting percentage. He also added two blocks in the match.
  • Allan Huang added 15 digs on the day (six against Loras, nine against BC).
