Men’s Volleyball Records Fourth NACC Victory With 3-1 Win Over CUC

Chicago, Ill. - For their fifth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest of the season, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's volleyball team welcomed the Concordia University Chicago Cougars to the Keating Sports Center.

The Hawks (8-11, 4-1) recorded their first victory over the Cougars (10-9, 3-3-) since the 2019 season after going 25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 to take the match. 

How it Happened

  • The two sides were tied at 5-5 before the Hawks broke away with six straight points to take a 11-6 lead. Through the remainder of the set, the Hawks were able to hold onto their lead, leaving the Cougars behind to take set one 25-18.

  • Set two began in favor of the visitors, but the Hawks were able to tie the set at 4-4 before taking the lead. The Hawks led until the Cougars came back to tie the set at 8-8. From there, three more ties would take place before the Hawks bounced back on top. The Cougars fought to stay in reach, but the Hawks were able to get far enough ahead to seal the set victory 25-22.

  • After being briefly tied at 2-2, the Cougars went on a 9-2 run to take a 11-4 lead, forcing the Hawks into a time out. Coming out of the timeout, the Hawks looked to turn momentum around, but were unsuccessful as the Cougars stayed ahead. The Cougars took set three 25-19. 

  • Throughout set four, the score remained tight between the two teams. In total, the set saw seven ties. The last tie came at 10-10 before the Hawks took three points, taking a 13-10 lead. For the remainder of the set, the Hawks stayed ahead while the Cougars kept it close. By the end of the set, the Hawks won 25-23 to take the match victory. 

Scarlet Hawks Standouts

  • Riley Laite led the Hawks with 11 kills and 36 total attacks. Laite finished with 8 digs, 1 block solo, and 1 block assist.

  • Paul Henderson had 9 kills, 24 total attacks, a .208 kills percentage, and 5 digs. 

  • Jelani Kimoto also had 9 kills while getting 15 total attacks, a .467 kill percentage, 1 service ace, 2 digs, and 1 block assist. 

Cougars Standouts

  • Tyler Holubek led the Cougars with 19 kills, 44 total attacks, and a .295 kill percentage. Holubek also picked up 7 digs and 1 block solo.

  • Luke Vozenilek picked up 14 kills, 35 total attacks, a .200 kill percentage, 2 service aces, and 8 digs.

""Tonight was an important win for our big picture of the season. Our experienced players know and understand the history between our teams and it feels good to take a step in the right direction in the head to head series with CUC. Thankfully our confidence was maintained through some ups and downs and we were able to pick each other up and make each other look good tonight!"

On Saturday, the Hawks will take part in a tri-match hosted by the Aurora University Spartans.The Hawks will take on the Spartans at 12:00 p.m. for a NACC match-up before playing the Endicott College Gulls at 2:30 p.m.
