Kaylee Wicka Scores 32, but Women’s Basketball Falls to Principia, 71-59

Chicago, Illinois- On an afternoon where freshman guard Kaylee Wicka was literally unstoppable, her performance was not enough to propel the Scarlet Hawks to a victory due to a Principia late surge in the final three minutes of the game.

Kaylee Wicka, Fr. G (Escondido, CA/Escondido HS) had a career high 32 points and was the catalyst for the Scarlett Hawks offense.  Wicka had a strong first half with 21 points going 8-for-14 from the field. Throughout the first half it was a thrilling game with both teams exchanging big basket.  At the end of the first half, the scarlet hawks led 30-29 with Wicka responsible for 21 of the Hawks 30 points.

The first 17 minutes of the second half followed the same pattern as the first, with both teams playing good efficient basketball and the Scarlet Hawks holding onto a slim lead throughout.  Principia managed to slow down Wicka in the second half holding her to 11 points. Michelle Arriola came off the bench and stepped up in the second half with some big shots, scoring seven points to keep the scarlet Hawks slim margin.

Principia's late surge came with 3:05 left on the clock led by Rachel Perea and Alexandra Weitman; each had 10 points in the second half. During the final three minutes of the game, Principia slowed down the Scarlet Hawk offense, allowing only one field goal while maintaining their efficiency on the offensive side of the ball. The late surge allowed Principia to pull away to 71-59 victory.

Coach Usha Gilmore said "it was a tough loss but the team showed great tenacity." The Scarlet Hawk Women's Basketball team will be in action again on Monday, December 8 at 7pm at Keating Sports Center where they will face North Park University.
