Women’s Basketball edged in Overtime Thriller by Mount Mary, 72-68

Chicago, IL- the Scarlet Hawks Women's Basketball team hosted Mount Mary at Keating Sports Center on Tuesday the 13th of January and the game turned out to be an overtime thriller. The Scarlet Hawks Women were very optimistic going into the match up after splitting the 2 game series in 2014.

The Scarlet Hawks started the first half with that intent going on a 5-0 run in the first 2 minutes of the game. The Blue Angels countered with a 5-0 run of their own immediately afterwards to tie the game at 5-5 with 16:47 on the clock. The first half  followed that pattern for the next few minutes until the Scarlet Hawks open a 9 point lead; 17-8 at the 13:49. Mount Mary would quickly cut into that lead tying the game at 20-20 with 8:08 on the clock. The Scarlet Hawks kept their composure heading into the locker room with a 34-26 lead.

The second half mirrored the first with the Scarlet Hawks opening up leads then to see Mount Mary cut into their lead. This was very frustrating for the Scarlet Hawks where every time it seemed they put the game out of reach, Mount Mary would fight their way back into striking distance. Taking us to the final 5 minutes of the second half where Tech kept a small lead. With 00:15 left on the clock, the Scarlet Hawks led 65-63, with Mount Mary out of timeouts and having to go the full court to tie the game. On the inbound, a Mount Mary player was fouled and sent to the free throw line where Becky Onan made both of her shots which forced the game to overtime.

In overtime, Mount Mary had all the momentum after the Scarlet Hawks were so close to a victory in regulation. Tech was outscored 7-3 in OT which resulted in a 72-68 Mount Mary victory.

Jessica Henriques led the way for the Scarlet Hawks with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Hailey Borowczyk chipped in with 15 points and Adrianna Maron added 13 points. The Hawks will be in action again on Saturday the 17th of January at Central Christian of Missouri at 2pm.
