Fitzpatrick-Meyers Leads the Charge in Another Overtime Victory for the Scarlet Hawks
Mt. Vernon, Iowa -  The Illinois Tech (3-2 Conference, 5-8 Overall) Women's Lacrosse Team earned its first ever road victory and third consecutive conference win over the Cornell College Rams (0-6 Conference, 1-13 Overall). Junior Goalie Briana Villagrana came up big with 19 saves on the day, three coming in the 3rd overtime period. The Scarlet Hawks started out slow falling to a 7-2 halftime deficit. Freshman Attacker Izzy Fitzpatrick-Meyers and Junior Attacker Nene Sanankoua were able to each put one past a solid Rams defense in the first half.
The second half was all Illinois Tech. Heather Bennett, Junior Midfielder from Gilberts, IL, opened the scoring in the second half going coast to coast after an impressive turnover by Senior Defender Sara Torres. This unassisted goal was Bennett's first of two goals in the game and her seventh of the season. The Scarlet Hawks were able to add five more goals in the second half, one more from Bennett, two from Captain Cassandra Reineke and the final two goals to send the game to overtime from Fitzpatrick-Meyers.
Defense was the key for both teams in the overtime period. Cornell Goalie Ebele Bay-Coffie came up with the big saves in the first two overtime periods, but it was Villagrana who had the last say with three huge saves before Sanankoua was able to flip the ball off the ground in front of the net through traffic to score the game winner. Fitzpatrick-Meyers was able to net her fourth of the game and fifteenth of the year, in the overtime period. Assistant Coach Jessica Morgan stated, "Izzy dominated not only on the offensive end but was also key in the transition during the second half, which led to us being able to have more opportunities to place the ball in the back of the net."
The Scarlet Hawks look to finish a weekend Iowa road trip against Wartburg College (2-3 Conference, 3-10 Overall) today in Waverly, IA.
