Women's Lacrosse Hangs Tough Against Defending Champs

MEQUON, Wis. - The Illinois Institute of Technology traveled to Concordia University Wisconsin to take on the defending Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference champions. Despite making things interesting late, the Scarlet Hawks fell 17-11.

How it Happened

  • CUW started out the match strong with two early goals before Alyssa DeLuca scored at the 23:46 mark.
  • The Falcons responded to DeLuca's goal 30 second later, starting a 4-0 run to take a 6-1 lead. It was CUW's largest lead of the first half.
  • The Scarlet Hawks pulled to within three, going on a 3-1 run to cut the deficit with 9:02 left in the first half. Isabel Fitzpatrick-Meyers, Isabella Rubin, and Taylor Thompson all found the back of the net during this span.
  • The Falcons closed off the half strong, scoring three of the final four goals in the frame to take a 10-5 lead into the break.
  • DeLuca scored the final goal of the first half and the first goal of the second half. After a Falcon goal at the 20:31 mark, Fitzpatrick-Meyers and Madison Meredith scored to pull the Hawks to within three at 11-8.
  • Despite two more goals from Rubin and another from Meredith down the stretch, the Falcons offense found a second gear and scored six more times the rest of the way.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Rubin and DeLuca each tallied three goals on four shots. Each player also recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers. DeLuca also tied for the team lead with three draw controls.
  • Fitzpatrick-Meyers and Meredith each scored twice. Meredith also recorded an assist and led the team with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Cassandra Reineke recorded four ground balls and three draw controls to go along with an assist.
  • Taylor Thompson scored her first goal of the season.

Stats to Know

  • The decisive stat of the match were the total shots, as the Falcons outshot the Hawks 29-18. CUW also recorded 19 draw controls compared to Tech's 10.
  • Tech held the advantage in turnovers (21-23) and ground balls (22-18).
  • Both teams were strong on clearing attempts. Tech was 13-of-16 while CUW was 10-of-13.
