Late Goal Moves Women's Lacrosse Past St. Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Illinois Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team played a non-conference match at St. Mary's (Indiana) on Thursday. In a back-and-forth match where neither team led by more than three goals, Tech prevailed 12-11.

How it Happened

  • Illinois Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead before St. Mary's went on a run. The Indiana school scored four of the next five goals to go ahead for the first time in the game.
  • The St. Mary's offense continued to impress, piling up eight goals in the half and taking the largest lead for either team of the match at 8-5 just before halftime. The Scarlet Hawks were able to score off of a free position attempt from Isabella Rubin with 29 seconds left in the half, making the score 8-6 at the intermission.
  • The two teams traded goals early in the second half before Tech went on a 3-0 to take a lead for the first time since early in the match. Three Isabel Fitzpatrick-Meyers goals over an eight minute span pushed the Hawks ahead 11-10 with 11:32 minutes to play.
  • St. Mary's tied the score back up at 11-11 just 15 seconds later.
  • The tone of the game changed down the stretch, going to an offensive match to a defensive one. Both teams went scoreless over the next ten minutes before Alyssa DeLuca scored with 1:18 left to play, giving the Scarlet Hawks the lead for good.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • DeLuca led the way on offense once again, scoring five times. She also led the team with four draw controls and picked up three ground balls.
  • Fitzpatrick-Meyers scored three times.
  • Rubin and Sarah Colby each tallied two goals. Rubin also led the team with seven ground balls and an assists.
  • Madison Meredith tallied an assists and six ground balls.

Stats to Know

  • Tech led in ground balls (35-33), shots (27-18), and free position shots (9-1). Tech was 6-of-9 on free position shots, while St. Mary's was 1-for-1.
  • The Scarlet Hawks were an impressive 17-of-19 on clearing attempts. St. Mary's was 19-of-32.
  • Tech also won the turnover battle (37-32).
