Tech Defeats Augsburg in Important MWLC Match

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Illinois Institute of Technology and Augsburg women's lacrosse team competed in a Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference match on Wednesday night as two of four teams tied for second place. The Scarlet Hawks took the important matchup by a score of 11-7 and moved into a two-way tie for second place with Aurora University.

How it Happened

  • Tech scored the first goal of the match, as Sarah Colby netted off an assist from Isabella Rubin just eight seconds into the match.
  • After Augsburg answered back to even the score at 1-1, the Scarlet Hawks took control of the match. Tech scored the next five goals, four of which came courtsey of Colby.
  • The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, leading to an 8-3 Tech advantage at the intermission.
  • Augsburg gained some momentum to start the second half, scoring the first two goals to pull to within three.
  • An Isabel Fitzpatrick-Meyers goal just 42 seconds after Augsburg's fifth tally slowed the home team's run. 
  • Augsburg pulled to within two with 12:18 to play with two more unanswered goals, but Tech defense tightened down the stretch. The Scarlet Hawks would not allow another goal for the rest of the match, as Alyssa DeLuca and Fitzpatrick-Meyers each tallied in the match's final two minutes to ice the victory.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Colby's strong first half propelled the Scarlet Hawks to the early advantage. She ended the match with five goals, two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
  • Abbie Reynolds earned another victory in net, stopping 10 shots and allowing just seven goals.
  • Fitzpatrick-Meyers tallied two goals and an assist.
  • DeLuca recorded a hat trick.
  • Madison Meredith scored and tallied a team-high six draw controls.
  • Jennifer Young led Tech with five ground balls.

Stats to Know

  • Both teams were nearly even on clears, as Tech was 20-of-27 while Augsburg was 20-of-26.
  • Augsburg committed 43 fouls compared to Tech's 31.
  • Illinois Tech led in shots 25-18.
  • Wednesday night was Tech's fifth victory in a row and fourth consecutive MWLC victory.

  • Tech is now off until Monday when the team will play the first of two straight matches at Stuart Field. Monday's match is a non-conference tilt with Dubuque.
