Women’s Lacrosse Earns Second Place in MWLC

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Illinois Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team closed out the 2016 season in strong fashion on a rainy Saturday afternoon. In a contest which determined second place in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference standings, Tech downed the Aurora Spartans 14-10.

How it Happened

  • Aurora took control of the match early, scoring three times in the first four and a half minutes.
  • Isabella Rubin scored the first of her five goals on the day at the 24:21 mark to put the Scarlet Hawks on the board.
  • After another Spartan tally at 20:21, the Scarlet Hawk defense changed the tide of the contest. Aurora would not score over the next 15 minutes, allowing Illinois Tech to rattle off four unanswered goals and take a 5-4 lead.
  • Tech scored three more times prior to halftime and led 8-5 heading into the intermission.
  • The Spartans were strong out of the break, scoring four of the first six goals to pull back to within one at 10-9.
  • It would not take the Scarlet Hawks long to respond, however, as Madison Meredith scored one of her six goals on the day off of a free position in a man-up scenario at the 18:46 mark to go up 11-9.
  • No goals would be scored for either team over the next 13 minutes of action, with Tech final breaking through on another Meredith tally with 5:45 left to play.
  • After an Aurora goal, Tech found the back of the next twice more to ice the victory.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Meredith scored six times to lead the Scarlet Hawks. She was also the only player to tally an assist and led the team in ground balls (seven), draw controls (six), and caused turnovers (six).
  • Rubin scored five times and also tied for the team lead in ground balls with seven. She also had three draw controls and three caused turnovers to her credit.
  • Isabel Fitzpatrick-Meyers scored twice and collected four ground balls.
  • Alyssa DeLuca scored once, won four draw controls, and added three ground balls.
  • Cassandra Reineke added five ground balls.
  • Abbie Reynolds made six saves for her tenth win on the year.

Stats to Know

  • Aurora collected four yellow cards and 38 fouls in the contest. Tech tallied one yellow card and 23 fouls.
  • Aurora was a perfect 17-of-17 on clears. The Scarlet Hawks were not far behind at 16-of-17.
  • AU won the ground ball battle 33-31.
  • Illinois Tech outshot the Spartans 29-22.

  • "All of our success this season is because we play as a team, act as a team, and believe in each other," said Head Coach Kirk Lamitie, who guided the Scarlet Hawks to an eight-win increase from the prior season. "All of the skill in the world does not compare to the amount of heart this team has."
