Franklin, Ind. - Brooke Rowan scored with 1:26 remaining in overtime, sending the Illinois Tech women's lacrosse team to their first victory of the season, 17-16 over Franklin College Wednesday evening in Franklin, Indiana. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 1-2 on the season. The Grizzlies dropped to 1-5 overall.
The Scarlet Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of goals by Shanie Scoles ten seconds apart. The Grizzlies tied it at 2-2 in the twelve minute mark before the Hawks rattled of four straight goals, including a pair by Alison Yurchak, to lead 6-2. The Grizzlies closed out the first quarter on a 3-1 run to cut their deficit to 7-5.
The Hawks outscored the Grizzlies 5-3 in the second quarter on a pair of tallies by Scoles and Rowan, and a single tally by Ella DeCurtis. The Hawks entered halftime leading 12-8.
Franklin responded with a strong rally in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 6-3, including a pair of goals by Anya Glodowski. The Hawks held a slim 15-14 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Rowan scored 49 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a 16-14 lead. Mia Turnbaugh of the Grizzlies scored her third of the match less than a minute later to cut the Hawks lead to 16-15. The Grizzlies Baleigh Riddle scored her fourth goal at the 3:10 mark to tie the match at 16-16, setting up the overtime dramatics for Rowan and the Scarlet Hawks.
