Scarlet Hawks Come Out on Top in Season Opener at CSI Classic

Staten Island, NY – The Illinois Tech women's soccer team started the 2014 season on the right foot as they grabbed a 2-1 win over the College of Staten Island on Saturday.  It was the first of two weekend matches in the College of Staten Island Fall Classic for the Hawks.  They will square off against John Jay College this afternoon at 2pm EST.

Once the Hawks were able to shake the early nerves and jitters, they took over the contest dominating possession for the rest of the afternoon and outshooting Staten Island by a margin of 17-9 (11-3 on goal).  Missed opportunities kept this game tight as the Hawks couldn't find their finishing stroke until the 27th minute.  Adrianna Maron caused a Dolphin turnover in the attacking third and found teammate Lorena Souza.  Souza took her first touch over the head of a defender and volleyed her second touch past goalkeeper Victoria Donegan for the 1-0 lead.

The Dolphins quickly responded as their main threat, Samantha Wysokowski, found herself in the box for a free header at 31:02.  Wysokowski took seven of the Dolphin's nine shots on the afternoon.

The Hawks looked to find a way to break the high line of the Dolphin's back four but struggled as they found themselves offsides 13 times.  Finally, a well-timed pass from Souza found Maron in behind the back line 25 yards out from goal.  The composed Maron took a few touches toward goal and calmly tucked home the game-winner with 10:34 left in the game.

Roxanne Myers posted 2 saves on the day for the Scarlet Hawks.
