Scarlet Hawks Handed First Loss of 2014

Chicago, Illinois – The Albion College Britons traveled to Stuart Field where they would take advantage of two early Scarlet Hawk blunders and finish with a 4-2 victory.  It was the first loss of the season for the Scarlet Hawk women's soccer team who arrived home from New York on Monday with a 2-0 record.

Just twelve minutes into the match, a Briton forward was played in behind the back line of the Hawks for a 1-on-1 opportunity with goalkeeper Roxanne Myers.  Myers, quick off her line, was able to force her away from goal and to the end-line.  Unfortunately, Hawk defender Sharon Wehmeyer came in with a late challenge while trying to clear the ball and the head referee decided to award a penalty shot.  Sam Larocca rolled the shot past Myers for the early 1-0 lead.  Just a little over two minutes later, Myers mishandled a routine shot off her fingertips which trickled across the goal line and gave the Britons an early 2-0 lead.

The Scarlet Hawks would not let these two early mistakes put an end to their efforts.  They would answer quickly as Lorena Souza took a feed from Adrianna Maron into the box.  She struck a low shot which the keeper got a foot on, but as the ball popped back into the air, Souza eagerly followed her shot and headed it into the back of the net to close the lead to 2-1.  The rest of the first half was back and forth as the Britons held a 10-8 advantage in shots.  They found the net one more time with a low 20-yard strike from Domenique Sarnecky in the 35th minute.

Tech put the pressure on in the second half creating many chances in the attacking third.  In the 63rd minute, Adrianna Maron struck a volley over the head of goalkeeper Maggie Troost to get the Hawks back within one goal at 3-2.  After some great efforts to find an equalizer, Albion put the finishing touch on the Hawks as Sarnecky finished off her hat trick on a header off of a corner kick in the 84th minute.

Albion finished the game with a 15-12 advantage in shots.  Myers made eight saves on the day for the Hawks.  Tech falls to 2-1 on the season and host St. Mary's College on Sunday afternoon.
