Myers, Hawks Blank Visiting Stars

Myers, Hawks Blank Visiting Stars

Chicago, IllinoisRoxanne Myers earned her second shutout of the season as the Scarlet Hawks handled Dominican University in a 3-0 win on a rainy Friday night at Stuart Field.

The Stars held a 6-5 shot advantage in the first half but the Hawks saw some real quality chances to open up the scoring.  Not able to execute the finishing touch, the teams headed into halftime scoreless.

A composed but energetic side would come out fighting in the second half as Veronica Torres got Illinois Tech on the board just ten minutes into the stanza.  Hawk center-back Kirsten Lamkin switched the ball to the left side of the field, finding Senior captain Veronica Torres.  Torres would take care of the rest as she beat two Star defenders with just the keeper to beat and the ball at her favorite left foot.  She calmly tucked the ball past goalkeeper Sara Stepanovich to take the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks weren't finished as they would again find the back of the net in the 67th minute.  As the ball bounced outside the box following a corner kick, Ana Salgado would put it back in the mix.  Torres redirected the ball with one touch across the box to Anida Phetchanpheng who would put her fourth goal of the season into the side netting.

Adrianna Maron put the finishing touches on this match as she hit her 25 yard free-kick over the head of Stepanovich with just 0:30 seconds remaining, securing the 3-0 win.

The Scarlet Hawks improve to 3-2 on the season while Dominican falls to 3-2.  The Hawks will be back at it on Sunday afternoon as they head to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on the Kohawks.
