Second-Half Surge Powers Illinois Tech Past Alverno

Second-Half Surge Powers Illinois Tech Past Alverno

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Illinois Institute of Technology's women's soccer team traveled to Alverno College this afternoon for a showdown with the Inferno.  The Scarlet Hawks added one to the win column with a convincing 4-0 result.

Illinois Tech was held without a goal in the entire first half despite outshooting the Inferno 13-0 and creating four corner kick opportunities.  The frustrated Hawks came out hungry in the second half, firing another 15 shots to Alverno's two.  The deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute when Anida Phetchanpheng received a through ball from Adrianna Maron.  Phetchanpheng dribbled into the box and slotted the ball into the lower corner for her seventh goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, Veronica Torres received a long pass from Hailey Kunkel with one defender to beat.  She blew by the defender and drilled a shot into the near side of the net.  Torres would then become the playmaker, setting up the last two Hawk goals on the day.  The third goal came just 0:22 seconds after her own.  She cut down the left side of the field and placed a perfect cross to the top of the six-yard box for Maron to finish with one touch.  Lorena Costa ended the scoring for the Hawks when she put another Torres cross into the bottom corner for her sixth of the season.

Roxanne Myers recorded her fourth shutout of the year and the Hawks improved to 5-3.  The women will have a week before their next game when North Park University visits Stuart Field for a 7pm crosstown match.
