Women's Soccer Drops Close Contest in First Match

The Illinois Institute of Technology Women's Soccer team opened the 2015 season at Stuart Field on Tuesday night, falling to Benedictine University 1-0.

How It Happened

  • Despite BenU outshooting the Scarlet Hawks 11-5 in the first half, Illinois Tech managed to keep things even. Roxanne Myers made six stops in the half, including two after the 40th minute and an impressive diving stop in the 31st minute off a Jackie Elzakhem shot.
  • The Eagles continued to control possession in half number two, finally getting a shot past Myers with 12 mintues remaining. Taylor Pokorny weaved between two defenders and scored from the left side from about 20 yards out.
  • Benedictine was able to stifle the Tech offense after the goal, not allowing a shot attempt

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Myers (Sr.) was magnificent in net, tallying 14 saves (six in half one, eight in half two) despite taking the loss
  • Anida Petchanpheng (Jr.) led the Scarlet Hawks with three shots
  • Adrianna Maron (Sr.), Jessica Park (Fr.), and Alyssa DeLuca (Fr.) each had one shot on goal

BenU Key Performers 

  • Pokorny (So.) scored the lone goal of the match, tallying six shots and three shots on goal
  • Zoie Holloway (Fr.) led BenU in shots (seven) in her first college contest

Stats to Know

  • Benedictine outshot Illinois Tech 27-7 for the match and 16-2 in the second half
  • After a tightly contested first 25 minutes, Benedictine tallied eight shots in the final 20 minutes of the first half
  • No cards were given out, and there were just 15 combined fouls on the day
