Women's Soccer Plays Muskingum to a 1-1 Draw

CHICAGO, Ill.- Illinois of Institute of Technology women's soccer team kicked-off the Scarlet Hawk Classic on Friday night, hosting Muskingum University. The Scarlet Hawks moved to 1-2-1 on the season, playing the Fighting Muskes to a 1-1 draw.

How it Happened

  • The Hawks offense generated multiple scoring chances early on in the match, which paid off in the 10th minute. Jessica Park scored her first collegiate goal as another freshman, Olivia Kochanek, set up her classmate with a nice pass to put Tech up 1-0.
  • Heather Maxwell made five saves in the first 35 minutes for the Muskies, but Liz Mitchell entered the game late in the first half. The change paid diviends, as Mitchell made two nice saves on Ade Maron shots early in the second half.
  • One of the two saves generated momentum and a scoring chance. Freshman Hailey Ferguson outran the Tech defense and kicked a shot past a diving Roxanne Myers to tie the game 1-1.
  • Despite seven shots in the half's final 15 minutes, Tech could not get a shot past Mitchell, sending the match into overtime.
  • Muskingum recoreded the only two shots in the first overtime, but Tech attempted six shots in the second overtime. However, Mitchell turned away the three shots on goal, including a Kirsten Robinson header with 28 seconds remaining to keep the score tied.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Maron (Sr.) recorded a season-high 11 shots with five shots on goal.
  • Myers (Sr.) stopped eight shots in net.
  • Robinson (Fr.) recorded a season-high six shots with two shots on goal.
  • Both of Park's (Fr.) shots were on net.

For the Fighting Muskies

  • Mitchell made seven saves in her 74 minutes of action.
  • Morgan Price led Muskingum in both shots (six) and shots on goal (five).

Stats to Know

  • Tech outshot Muskingum 29-17 for the match and also led in corner kicks 9-8
  • Muskingum was whistled for 10 fouls compared to Illinois Tech's seven
  • Maron's 11 shot attempts is the most for an Illinois Tech player this season 
  • Myers has now made 38 saves in just four contests
