Late Comeback Falls Short at Benedictine

Late Comeback Falls Short at Benedictine

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Illinois Tech women's soccer team made the drive to nearby Lisle, Illinois on Wednesday evening to oppose Benedictine University. Despite two goals late in the second half, the Scarlet Hawks fell 3-2 to the host Eagles.

How it Happened

  • Benedictine started fast, scoring on the second shot of the match. Danielle Melotte scored in the 10th minute on a redicrect off of a Taylor Pokorny cross to put the Eagles up 1-0.
  • The majority of the first half stayed quiet, as the teams combined for just seven shots. Melotte's early goal was the only tally over the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Half number two was much more hectic. BenU started the scoring off in the frame in the 54th minute on a goal from Pokorny.
  • Down 2-0, the Scarlet Hawks would not give in. Anida Phetchanpheng scored in the 67th minute off of a Kirsten Robinson pass to pull within a goal.
  • Both teams' defenses would tighten down the stretch. After BenU goalkeeper Cassidy Henson stopped a Robinson shot in the 80th minute, Megan Anderson scored for the Eagles in the 88th minute to go up 3-1.
  • Once again, the Scarlet Hawks would respond. Just 35 seconds after the Anderson goal, Venika Jarvis notched her first-ever collegiate goal on a header in front of the net to make the score 3-2.
  • However, Jarvis' goal would be the final shot either team would attempt on the night, leading to a 3-2 Benedictine win.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Phetchanpheng and Jarvis both scored on their only shot attempts of the evening.
  • Robinson added an assist and led the team with two shot attempts.
  • Jessica Park recorded five saves.

For the Foes

  • Pokorny led the team with five shots and was the only player to add both a goal and an assist.

Stats to Know

  • BenU outshot Tech 14-7 overall and 8-4 on net.
  • Both teams committed 11 fouls.
  • The Eagles attempted three corners compared to just one for the Hawks.
