Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Illinois Tech women's soccer team ran into a stingy opponent in Calvin University, falling to the Knights 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids in a non-conference match. The Scarlet Hawks record evened up at 1-1 for the season. The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season and have shut out both of their opponents in the young season.

Offense was hard to come by for the Hawks, as they were only able to manage five total shots and two shots on goal. The Illinois Tech defense was fairly stout itself, however, limiting the Knights to just 10 shots, after Calvin had put up 31 shots in their previous contest.

How It Happened

  • Elizabeth Williams of the Knights tallied the only goal of the game, scoring unassisted at the 38.33 mark of the first half for the ultimate game-winning goal. It was Williams' third goal of the season in two games played.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Lucy Vanveldhuisen finished with two shots with one shot on goal.
  • Amelia Moseman had one shot with one shot on goal.
  • Goalkeeper Hailey Flannagan made three saves on four shots on goal.
  • The Hawks defense limited the Knights to 10 shots on goal, after Calvin finished with 31 shots in their previous match versus Heidelberg.

Inside the Box Score

  • Calvin outshot Illinois Tech 10-5.
  • Fouls were relatively even: Illinois Tech had 9 fouls to 10 for Calvin.
  • Each team had two corner-kick opportunities.

Up Next

  • The Scarlet Hawks will hit the road for the short journey to Elmhurst College on Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30 PM when they take on the Bluejays in a non-conference matchup.
