Women Finish Sixth at Phoenix Fall Classic

Chicago, Illinois - The Scarlet Hawk women swam to an overall sixth place out of seven this past weekend at the University of Chicago's 6th Annual Phoenix Fall Classic. 

On the first day of the meet, the 200 Freestyle Relay consisting of Ava Obenaus, Maria Behrens, Haley Slator and Milica Gvozdjan finished in fourth place with a time of 1:57.39. Obenaus then swam a lifetime best swim in the 1650 Freestyle, finishing in 9th place at 20:58.48. 

On day two, Freshman Brigitte Temple swam her way into the consolation heat of finals in the 200 Individual Medley, finishing in 14th place with a time of 2:19.30. Temple also qualified for the championship final heat in the 100 Breaststroke, finishing seventh with a final time of 1:10.89. Wischmeyer also made it back in the 100 Breaststroke, finishing 13th with a final time of 1:16.31. 

On the third and final day of the meet, Temple again set the pace, finishing eighth in the 400 Individual Medley (4:55.83).  Briana Tyler finished 11th in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:04.01, while teammate Slator finished just behind her in 14th place with a time of 1:08.22. Slator also swam to a lifetime personal best in the 100 Backstroke, with a time of 1:05.48. Wischmeyer and Gvozdjan rounded out the meet, finishing eighth and ninth in the 200 Breaststroke with times of 2:45.92 and 2:50.21 respectively.

The results of the meet contributed to the Scarlet Hawks being ranked fourth in the power rankings of the Liberal Arts Championship Conference according to collegeswimming.com.

The women will next face Lincoln College, Manchester University and Eureka College in an invitational meet held at Ekco Pool on December 6, 2014 at 1pm. At this meet, Senior Maria Behrens will be recognized for her outstanding contributions and commitment to Illinois Tech Swimming.
